Curriculum Vitae
Isabelle CHABOT, Ph.D. of the European University Institute (Florence), under the direction of Christiane Klapisch-Zuber (EHESS, Paris). Post-Doc Specialization: fellowship at Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies (Florence); two-year post-doc scholarship at the Department of History of the University of Florence.

IC is a social historian, specialist in history of the medieval family, particularly interested in gender relations within the context of kinship. She began working on the elaboration of family memory in the 14th century Florence. Then, she broadened her view to better understand the systems of family and social reproduction, investigating from a comparative perspective the construction of inheritance law in the municipal statutes between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, and the practices of devolution of heritage, in particular through the study of wills in Florence. Starting from a conspicuous corpus of Florentine family books and with the conceptual tools of historical anthropology, she has also analyzed the customary gestures and exchanges that, in Florence, surround the entrance and exit from the marital state. In this way she has contributed to rethinking the practices of circulation of women and their goods, and more generally the reproduction systems of the patrilineal family in Tuscany in the late Middle Ages.
Her interest in dowry systems led her to investigate the development of dotal charity between the Middle Ages and the modern age, from an interesting Bolognese case study and by analysing the Florentine wills of the 14th and 15th centuries. Investigating the Florentine catasto of 1427, she has broadened her reflection including female poverty, the women at work and the multiple activities for family survival.
She is currently interested in the relationship that women have with family justice and civil justice, investigating in particular the resolution (arbitral or otherwise) of dowry and successions conflicts and the requests for summary procedure (pleas).
