Genes involved in reception of chemical cues in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

The perception and discrimination of thousands of different odorants by the vertebrate olfactory system results from the activation of specific odorant receptors expressed by olfactory neurons in the nose.
Vertebrate odorant receptors comprise three types of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs): the olfactory receptors OR, vomeronasal V1R and V2R receptors. Teleost fish have about 100 OR genes.

The work will involve the isolation, characterization and study of variation of odorant receptors in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), using the female guppy genome and several transcriptomes available in gene banks and bioinformatic tools. Differential expression between males and females and between tissues will be evaluated using bioinformatics tools from available transcriptomes in gene banks and by real time PCR on candidate genes.

Principal Investigator: research grant from the University of Padua for a 3-year project on the transcriptomic analysis of Colorado Potato beetles and differential gene expression between populations resistant and those susceptible to neonicotinoids. Funding covered the creation of a bioinformatics team of a post-doctoral fellows and undergraduate students.
Principal Investigator: research grant awarded by the Academy of Finland to fund work on the maintenance of genetic variability in animals with asexual reproduction. Funding covered the creation of a team of researchers including Ph.D. candidates and a post-doctoral fellow to undertake a four-year research project.

2007 – present Molecular Phylogenies for post-graduate students of Evolutionary Biology, University of Padua.
2006-2011 Aspects of Life History Evolution in Animals for post-graduate students of Marine Biology, University of Padua.

I had mentored 2 post-doctoral fellows, 6 PhD students and 18 master students. I am coordinating an Erasmus student exchange program with the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.
