Curriculum Vitae
Born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1972 Alexandra Chavarria has been associate professor at the University of Padua, and entitled to full professor, since 2015.
Her career has had a wide international impact: after completing her PhD in Germany with a prestigious grant by the Cultural Fundation La Caixa, she has spent periods researching in France and Italy and as visiting professor in Australia, the USA and Germany. She currently coordinates the Erasmus program for the School of Humanities at her university and is responsible for Internationalisation within the Department of Cultural Heritage.
Her research encompasses late Roman and medieval settlements, churches and burials, the archaeology of standing buildings and the study of historical cities and landscapes. On these subjects she has written 5 monographs, edited 13 books and published more than 80 papers in international journals and volumes. She has also coordinated the creation of 2 mobile apps on historic urban and rural landscapes.
She is founder and editor of the European Journal of PostClassical Archaeologies (since 2011) and Hortus Artium Medievalium (since 2019). She is also on the editorial board of the journal Archeologia dell'Architettura (since 2015) and on the scientific committees of several international journals. In 2018 she was elected member of the directive council of The Italian Medievalist Archaeologist Society (SAMI) is inscribed in the ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites).
Currently she coordinates the Paduan team of the PRIN project "Archeologia al futuro" (2016-2019) and the project ARCHIDATA developed by Petra Urbanova (Seal of Excellence Fellowship) on OSL dating for historical mortars (since 2018). She is the coordinator for Italy of the major European project CARE (Corpus of Early Medieval European Churches) and developer of the WIKI-CARE Italy project involving more than 80 Italian researchers. She previously led the project THISTLE, developed by the Marie Curie Fellowship Sandrine Paradis-Grenouillet (2016-2017). She has been PI of a Progetto di Eccellenza, funded by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio of Padova and Rovigo, on the architectural medieval heritage of Padua and its territory. She was also PI of the Paduan team within the FP7 project Mediterranean Mountainous Landscapes, selected in 2016 by the EU Humanities Scientific Committee as one of the top five innovative research projects in the humanities and as an outstanding example of current European cultural heritage research and practice in the recent publication Innovation in Cultural Heritage Research
She has directed numerous archaeological projects including the excavation in the unique UNESCO site of Torba-Castelseprio (2013-2018), several italian churches and monasteries and various sites on Rab, Croatia (since 2005). Since 2015, she has led a series of participatory community archaeological projects in northern Italy the working with local communities to record and manage local cultural heritage as a resource for cultural, social and economic development.
She has supervised 11 PhDs on: late roman villas (A. Castrorao co-supervised with the U. of Siena), medieval urbanism (F. Giacomello), Baetican churches (E. Cerrato), stable isotopic analysis (M. Marinato), early medieval ceramics (G. Ganzarolli co- supervised with the U. of Aix Marseille); and, currently, early medieval sculpture (P. Vedovetto), landscape archaeology in Croatia (M. Rizner)

Research areas
Her interests range from late Roman and Medieval archaeology (settlements, churches, burials), to the archaeology of standing buildings and the study of historical rural and urban landscapes subjects on which she has published groundbreaking papers and books. She has grown a team of young researchers developing new methodologies such as stable isotopes analysis, mortar dating by OSL methods, archeometrical and gascromatographical analysis of ceramics, GIS systems to record and analyse urban data. She is also very active in the field of community archaeology and the involvement of local communities for the recording and management of local cultural heritage as a resource for developement.
On these subjects she has written 4 monographies, edited 15 books and published more than 100 papers in international journals and volumes.
She is the national coordinator for Italy of the project Corpus Architecturae Religiosae Europae (CARE) and directs the WIKI-CARE Italy in which more than 80 researchers from Italy are involved. She takes part in the project Erasmus KA2 Integrated methodologies to historical landscape recording: participatory approaches with Croatia, France and Cyprus.
During the last years she has participated as coordinator for the local unit in a series of important national and international projects such as the FP7 Mediterranean Mountain Landscapes on the study of agrarian landscapes (2014-2017) selected in 2016 by the EU Humanities Scientific Committee as one of the top five innovative research projects in the humanities and as an outstanding example of current European cultural heritage research and practice in the recent publication Innovation in Cultural Heritage Research, the PRIN project Archeologia al futuro. Teoria e prassi dell’archeologia pubblica per la conoscenza, tutela e valorizzazione, la partecipazione, la coesione sociale e lo sviluppo sostenibile (2016-2019). Since Mai 2019 she is the PI of the project Environment, nutrition and health in the Middle Ages: how archeology can shed light on the impact of climate change on the health of today's population funded by the University of Padova and 2nd step of the project Cimiteri Alto Medievali in Italia settentrionale (2013-2016).
She has been the PI of the project: Architetture residenziali medievali di Padova. Tra ricerca e valorizzazione (II) (project “Eccellenza 2012-2013” of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo) and directs the online participatory catalogue are involved in cataloguing early medieval churches for the international project CARE..
She has participated in many international research projects including: Croatian medieval heritage in European context: mobility of artists and transfer of forms, functions and ideas (funded by the Croatian Ministry of Culture, scientific director: M. Jurkovic); Asturmetria (funded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Education, scientific director: J. A. Gutiérrez Gonzàlez).
