Kalliopi Pilichou, assistant professor (SSD MED/08) in the Dept. of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Sciences- University of Padua Medical School. Graduated in Biological Sciences at the University of Padua in 2003. She carried out her residency in Medical Genetics in 2012 at the University of Padua.
Dr. Pilichou completed her PhD studies in Cardiovascular Sciences in 2006 carrying out research in molecular biology and genetics of heredo-familial cardiomyopathies. Specifically, she identified and associated mutations in desmoglein-2 gene (DSG2) with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC), providing a significant contribution to the understanding of the genetic origin of this disease and to the early diagnosis of ARVC patients and their asymptomatic relatives (Pilichou K et al., Circulation, 2006).
Subsequently, in 2006, she sought two international collaborations with experts in the field of transgenesis, one with Dr. C.R. Bezzina (Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), where she established as a visiting researcher, a transgenic animal model (N271S dsg2) recapitulating major clinical and pathological features of the disease, and in parallel a second collaboration with the group of Prof. R.E. Leube (Johannes Gutenberg- University Mainz, Germany), who kindly shared the dsg2 knock-out model for electric and morphologic cardiac investigation (Pilichou K et al., JEM, 2009).
The research of Dr. Pilichou in cardiac sudden death and cardiomyopathies was published in high-ranking journals of the cardiovascular field, i.e. Circulation, J Exp Med, J Am Coll Cardiol, Eur Heart J with total impact factor 222,518 (IF medio 7.18, H-index 14, Citations 1070).
Since 2006 she is a fellow/member of Italian Society of Cardiology, Italian Association of Cardiovascular Pathology, Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology, European Society of Human Genetics and European Society of Human Genetics. Her studies have been awarded by 6 national and international prizes: in 2006 she received the International award 'Massimo Castagnini' of the Società Italiana di Medicina Legale e delle Assicurazioni, in 2007 she received a scholar for her research in international istitutions from the Italian Society of Cardiology, in 2008 a Travel Grant from the Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology and in the same year she received by the Italian Society of Cardiology an Award for the best abstract presented in cardiovascular science during the American Heart Association Conference in New Orleans-2008, in 2009 she has been awarded with the prize “Giorgio Olivetti” of the Italian Association of Cardiovascular Pathology and the prize for the best publication in international scientific journals of cardiovascular science by the Italian Society of Cardiology, finally in 2012 she received the prize for the ‘best presentation’ from the Association for European Cardiovascular Pathology.
