Main scientific contributions
My work has been always focused on calcium signaling, with emphasis on mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake. Most importantly, I identified the long sought Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter (MCU), i.e. the channel of the IMM responsible for the electrophoretic accumulation of Ca2+ inside organelle matrix (De Stefani D et al, Nature. 2011 Jun 19;476(7360):336-40). I also identified the endogenous dominant-negative isoform of MCU, named MCUb (Raffaello A et al, EMBO J. 2013 Aug 28;32(17):2362-76) and proposed a unifying hypothesis for the highly debated mechanism of MCU gating (Patron M et al, Mol Cell. 2014 Feb 20; 53(5):726-737). Finally, I characterized for the first time the role of MICU3 in the control of mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis (Patron M et al, Cell Death Differ. 2018). Currently, Iā€™m working on the identification of ATP-sensitive mitochondrial potassium channels (mitoKATP) and their physiopathological role.
