Curriculum Vitae
Michele Zappalorto has worked for about 10 years in the field of composite and nanocomposite materials and has a consistent spectrum of publications on these topics. He also serves as Associate Editor for three international journals on polymeric composites and advanced materials, namely the Journal of Nanomaterials (IF 1.871 JCR 2016), the International Journal of Polymer Science (IF 1.1.067 JCR, 2017) and Advances in Materials Science and Engineering (IF 1.299 JCR, 2016). His scientific and research interests over the recent 10 years are on polymeric composites and nanocomposites, with particular reference to the study of their structural response, the damage mechanics and the development of predictive models. Understanding and describing the fatigue and fracture behaviour of composite and nanocomposite materials and the study of stress distributions in composite laminates are of primary interest, as well as modelling of the toughening mechanisms and multifunctional response in composites and nanocomposites.

Research areas
L’attività di ricerca di Michele Zappalorto è stata prevalentemente orientata alla modellazione teorica e numerica, affiancata però anche da attività di validazione di carattere sperimentale.
Il principio che ha ispirato le diverse ricerche condotte dallo scrivente è stato il tentativo di sviluppare teorie solide ed affidabili di supporto alla progettazione strutturale di componenti meccanici, criccati o intagliati, realizzati sia in materiali tradizionali, come acciaio o leghe di alluminio, sia in materiali innovativi, come compositi e nanocompositi.
L’attività svolta può essere utilmente suddivisa nei seguenti fronti:
-Analisi della resistenza a fatica di giunzioni saldate;
-Studio analitico e numerico dei campi di tensione elastici ed elastoplastici indotti da intagli di varia forma in componenti piani e tridimensionali;
-Analisi teorica e sperimentale delle proprietà meccaniche di materiali compositi e nanocompositi a matrice polimerica;
-Compositi multifunzionali per il monitoraggio dell'integrità strutturale: sviluppo, modellazione e applicazioni industriali.

E’ stato coordinatore del Comitato Organizzatore del convegno europeo ECCM15, 15th European Conference on Composite Materials. Il convegno che si è tenuto a Venezia nel giugno 2012, ha avuto la partecipazione di oltre 1500 ricercatori provenienti da più di 60 paesi.
E’ stato uno dei promotori per la formazione del gruppo “Mechanics of Nanocomposites”, un gruppo di ricerca internazionale a cui hanno aderito al momento 9 centri di ricerca e finalizzato a condividere e a promuovere nella comunità scientifica i più recenti progressi relativi alla modellazione delle proprietà meccaniche dei materiali nanocompositi.
L’attività del gruppo ha portato all’organizzazione del convegno ICNN4-4th International Conference on Nanomechanics and Nanocomposites, tenutosi a Vicenza dal 14 al 17 Settembre 2016.
La sua produzione scientifica è documentata da oltre 100 pubblicazioni di cui:
- 70 articoli su rivista internazionale con referee e IF;
- 4 articoli su rivista internazionale senza IF;
- 4 articoli su rivista nazionale;
- 40 memorie a convegni internazionali;
- 30 memorie a convegni nazionali;
- 1 Capitolo su un libro internazionale.
È stato inoltre Guest Editor di un numero speciale sulla rivista Composite Interfaces e di un numero speciale sulla rivista Composites Part B: Engineering.
E' stato nel comitato scientifico di numerosi congressi inerenti ai materiali compositi, tra i quali si segnala, ECCM 16 (Siviglia, 2014), ECCM17 (Monaco, 2016), ECCM18 (Atene, 2018).
