Curriculum Vitae
He was born in Catania on the 22nd February 1956.
In 1982 he was graduated with full marks in Civil Engineering at the University of Catania.
In 1985 he was awarded with the degree of Master of Science in Soil Mechanics at the University of Padua.
In 1989 he was awarded Doctor of Philosophy in Geotechnical Engineering at the Technical University of Torino.
From 1991 to 1998 he was senior research fellow at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering of the University of Padua.
In 1998 he became Associate Professor in Geotechnical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Catania, where he spent one year in teaching "Soil Mechanics" and "Soil Dynamics".
In 1999 he moved at the University of Padua where he is regular teacher of "Geotechnics" for the Environmental Engineering degree curse. He has also taught "Soil Mechanics", "Retaining Structures", “Geotechnical Design”, “Remediation of contaminated lands”, "Computational Experimental Seminar", "Underground Structures", "Underground and Retaining Structures" and “Soil Protection Project”.
He is author of about 100 papers, published in national and international journals and conference proceedings. The main fields of research are: soil and foundation dynamics, experimental soil mechanics, retaining structures and soil reinforcement.
He has been in charge of the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Department IMAGE of the University of Padua and referent of several public and private research projects, including “New developments in designing of geosynthetic reinforced wall” and the project PRIN 2000 "A geotechnical model of the subsoil for safeguarding Venice and its lagoon", both sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Technology and Research (MURST). He has been also leader for the research unit of Padua involved in the RELUIS I and RELUIS II projects, concerning the seismic protection of geotechnical structures, sustained by the Department of Civil Protection of the Italian Government. He was leader of the Project 2007 "Seismic behaviour of reinforced earth works" financed by the University of Padua, in which he designed and developed a seismic table for testing physical models of medium dimensions.
He has been member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the XXIII National Conference of Geotechnics (2007) and the Scientific Committee of the Seismic Engineering International Conference Commemorating the 1908 Messina and Reggio Calabria Earthquake (2008) and of the Organizing Committee of the XV Conference ANIDIS on Seismic Engineering in Italy (2013).
He has been member of the Teachers College of the Specialization Course in "Methods and Techniques of Building Recovery and Restoration" and of the PhD in “Civil and Environmental Engineering Sciences”, both held at the University of Padua.
