SOME RESARCH ACTIVITY: APPOINTMENTS AND PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH PROJEC TS

President of the Italian Society of Analitic Philosophy (SIFA) since 2008 until 2010. Now: member of SIFA, member of the Italian Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science (SILFS); member of the steering committee of the Italian Society of History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Medicine and Biology (BIOM).

Referee for a few distinguished journals, referee and member of some Program committees for international workshops and conferences (among them: FOIS (International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems) -2006, -2008, -2010).

A SYNTHETIC VIEW OF THE RECENT RESEARCH LIFE

In 2007 and in 2008 a line of research concerned the philosophy of cognitive sciences, specifically the general concept of rationality, errors in deductive reasoning and the understanding of conditional sentences (articles and editing of a book). Another line of research concerned the philosophy of medicine, with special regard to the difficulty of reasoning about a single case and some aspects of the way in which the conception of method evolved in medical thought (articles and parts of books.
In 2009 Giaretta did some further work in philosophy of medicine, dealing again with reasoning in clinical diagnosis and, moreover, with the concepts of health and disease. He also dealt with themes of formal epistemology: the relation between the paradox of knowability and the Russell-Myhill paradox and he examined the connection between the principle of knowability of truth and some epistemic versions of the disjunction property.
In 2010 a mereology for the change of parts and certain aspects of scientific explanations related to the notion of evidence in criminal trials were the topic of some papers.
2011-2015 are dedicated to the analysis of a famous argumentation by Socrates, to definitions of certain scientific concepts, to a review of certain ways in which information is sought and used in medicine, to the eclectic features of some diagnoses in medicine, to the conceptualization and formal representation of some basic anatomical notions, to the connections between some different approaches to truth and paradoxes.
Some of the previous researches are still ongoing.

Research areas
FROM THE END OF THE 70s TO THE 90s

In LATE SEVENTIES and EARLY EIGHTIES his main research topics were: history of logic (a book in Italian), intuitionistic logic (a paper in English and one in Italian) and the notion of identity (a book in Italian). In the LATE EIGHTIES, in the NINETIES and also more recently he has been concerned with Russell's logic and philosophy of logic as well as with the possible ways of conceiving logic (some papers and the editing of a book). In the nineties, while beginning to cooperate with the clinical methodologist G. Federspil, he did some research in ontology, especially on identity and identity criteria (various papers and the editing of a book). A part of this research is connected to the work done with Nicola Guarino on the role of ontology in knowledge representation in Artificial Intelligence (some papers). Enlarging his interests, but mainly sticking to the aspects concerning reasoning, he took into account the ways in which the conditional form and the notion of logical validity occur in every day reasoning (papers and the editing of a book). The cooperation with Federspil resulted in the analysis of some aspects of the diagnostic processes in clinical medicine (papers and a book).

In the last years, some paradoxical aspects of principles involved in commonsense or in its formal representation and the relation between conceptualization and explanation have been investigated. Some of these researches are still ongoing.
