Syllabus
Prerequisites: A fair knowledge of the Italian language.
Target skills and knowledge: In accordance with the latest up-to-date Portuguese and Brazilian manuals, the student will learn to recognize the orthographic and phonetic peculiarities both of the European (ES) and the Brazilian Standard (BS) of the Portuguese Language. By following regularly the theoretical lessons (frontal module) and the language practice activities, the student will be able to acquire the corresponding skills at least at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Languages.
Examination methods: The final (and unique) mark will result from the weighted average between:

1. The marks (written and oral) of the partial tests to be sustained with Dr. Jorge Maximino, for the ES language practice activities and with Dr. Bianca Ferrini for the BS language practice activities;

2. The mark of the written and oral exam to be sustained with Professor Sandra Bagno.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be done according to the following criteria:

A. the student must pass the partial (written and oral) tests of the language practice activities of both Portuguese Standards, which are preparatory to the written exam with Prof. Bagno (see point B.). During the language practice activities with Dr. Maximino (ES) and with Dr. Ferrini (BS) tests will be carried out (continuous assessment). Their evaluations will affect the respective partial final marks. Only the students who give evidence of attending regularly the language practice activities of both Standards can access the tests in progress;

B. the student will have to pass the written exam with Professor Bagno, by which he/she will have to demonstrate to master the topics dealt with during the courses.
Course unit contents: The course programme - «The Portuguese language and its two Standards» - consists of two modules:

1.the study of phonemic and graphic systems of Portuguese in its two Standards. Foundations of morphology and syntax: the article; the noun; the adjective; the numerals; the pronoun; the preposition; the active conjugation of regular and some irregular verbs; basic notions of the syntax of modes and times. Reading and translation of texts taken from the bibliography of references as well as important magazines and newspapers.
2.introduction to the history of the Portuguese language and to the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking countries.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: In parallel to the lectures (Professor S. Bagno), planned for the first semester, there will be language practice activities, both in the first and in the second semester, held by Dr. J. Maximino (ES) and Dr. B. Ferrini (BS).
Students of Portuguese mother tongue must take the exam in its entirety, although not required to attend the language practice activities.
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the lessons accurate indications will be given about the availability of study materials and, if not present in the library, they will be provided through the Moodle e-learning platform.
