Syllabus
Prerequisites: Keen interest in the subject. Familiarity with some of the main European or extra-European early modern history topics. Students wishing to study in other languages (English, French, German, Spanish) may agree on alternative readings with the lecturer.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to familiarise students with some of the main themes in early modern social history at master’s level. Particular attention will be given the evolution of material culture in relation to the mobility of knowledge. The course will be focussing on Western Europe in a global perspective. By the end fo the course students should have gained a good grasp of social history’s methodologies, thereby being able to read and contextualise some primary sources; they should likewise be able to relate them to the appropriate historiographical contexts about the mobility of knowledge in early modern social history.
Examination methods: ATTENDEES:
A) a written assignment, 5-7 Word pages long, on a subject chosen by the student among the following:
1. women, knowledge, and social mobility in 17C France;
2. the mobility of information in early modern Venice;
3. the mobility of texts and objects in early modern Europe;
4. the mobility of people in the early modern global worlds.
B) An oral discussion on the subject of their written assignment.

NON ATTENDEES:
A) an oral exam on two books chosen by the student from among the list "Testi di riferimento".

2. the mobility of information in early modern Venice;
3. the mobility of texts and objects in early modern Europe;
4. the mobility of people in the early modern global worlds.

NON ATTENDEES:
A) an oral exam on two books chosen by the student from among the list "Testi di riferimento".
Course unit contents: The course is made up of four units. Each focusses on one aspect of mobility in early modern European social history (1517-1815).
1. women, knowledge, and social mobility in 17C France;
2. the mobility of information in early modern Venice;
3. the mobility of texts and objects in early modern Europe;
4. the mobility of people in the early modern global worlds.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is seminar-based and organised around thematic units. Each one is made up of lecture, discussion of assigned readings, including primary sources, and students’ oral presentations. During the course digital humanities tools will enhance students’ learning experience with primary source material.
