Syllabus
Prerequisites: No special prerequisite is required.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide a general knowledge of artistic events in the contemporary age, from the stylistic and thematic revolutions of the late Eighteenth Century to the Informalism/Abstract Expressionism of the second Post-War period. An in-depth study will focus on the avant-gardes preceding the First World War, when languages and the concept of art were drastically reformulated, and the foundations for subsequent experimentations were laid. The student will acquire a specific skill in understanding the expressions of contemporary art and culture, even the most recent ones. The examination of the evolution of styles, in the succession of artists and movements, will be framed in the historical context and in relations with other cultural sectors: from technology to philosophy, from science to literature, from theater to cinema.
Examination methods: The recommended exam for foreign students is oral. Its maximum duration is 30 minutes. The first topic is chosen by the student himself, who must demonstrate that he is able to summarize a topic (an artwork, an author, a current, a theme ...) in an exposition of 5-7 minutes. Then, the teacher will ask a couple of topics for each book in the program in order to verify the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Generally the questions will start from the images of the artworks.

Alternatively, ONLY FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING THE COURSE, it is possible (no obligation) to replace the oral exam with two written tests. The first test will be in the middle of the course; the second will be immediately after the end of the lessons. Modality: projection of images of artworks, of which the student will indicate: author; dating (approximate); description (technique, subject, cultural references ...).
Attention: the written test is quite difficult for non-native Italian speakers.
Assessment criteria: It will be evaluated the knowledge of the topics discussed in the course; knowledge and understanding of the proposed concepts and methods; the ability to apply this knowledge autonomously and knowingly; the logical-argumentative abilities, the relevance of the answers with respect to the questions; the ability to construct “one's own critical discourse" that is relevant, clear, effective and personal. It will be evaluated in particular the student's ability to place the works in their historical context, tracing them correctly to dating, trends and authors. It will also be evaluated the ability to describe the works in a critical way and with appropriate terminology, knowing to refer punctually to the technical and stylistic features.
Course unit contents: Study of artistic developments from Neoclassicism to the Informalism/Abstrac Expressionism through the examination of the artworks of the main protagonists. A specific in-depth study will be dedicated to the theorization and experimentation of the movement of the image by the avant-gardes. In particular the writings of Ricciotto Canudo and the work of Wassily Kandinsky and Marcel Duchamp will be dealt with.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures will try to involve students and stimulate discussion. They will always be accompanied by video projection of images and videos.
Attendance is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: It is mandatory to consult catalogs and iconographic repertoires (also online) relating to the artists studied.
On the Moodle page of the course the images of the artworks shown in class will be uploaded.
The program is the same for attending and non-attending students.
