Syllabus
Prerequisites: No particular knowledge or skills requested
Target skills and knowledge: The course will introduce to sociology both as a science and as a point of view on social worlds. We will focus on the development of sociological theory, in the first part of the course; on research methods, in the second; on a limited number of sociological objects, in the last.
The successful student will develop a good "sociological eye" (Hughes), a proper "sociological imagination" (Wright Mills) finally a critical reading of social facts and their representation in the public sphere.
Examination methods: Written test, standardized questions with open answers. During the lessons, there will be time to read back the contents of the course and to prepare the final test.
Assessment criteria: The grading system will be comunicated at the beginning of the course.
Course unit contents: A printed copy of the syllabus will be given to each student on the first day of lessons. A digital copy will be uploaded to mooodle platform.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will mix up: lectures, cooperative learning (group works), class-test. I will often use audioviual and readings (fiction, novels, etc.)
Additional notes about suggested reading: The books must be studied entirely. During the course, they will be integrated through critical readings and research examples. Therefore, attending gives a more complete preparation, but does not replace the study of texts.
