Prerequisites: No prerequisites required.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire basic knowledge of cellular and molecular biology and essentials regarding histology methods and concepts.
Laboratory work and exercises are planned to complete the course with a practical experience.

The microbiology part will give an introduction to the field, with elements of clinical relevance.
Examination methods: Marks will reflect the evaluation of practical experiences and of a final written exam, with different tests for the Biology and Microbiology parts.
Assessment criteria: The student must be familial with terms and concepts of biology and histology.
A good comprehension of practical exercises scopes and methods is also needed.
Course unit contents: Biological macromolecules (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids).
Cellular organization in procaryotes ann eukaryotes, with short introduction on life origin and evolution.
Stucture and function of the eukaryotic cell (nucleus, mitochondria, membranes, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus, lyosomes, peroxisomes, cytoskeleton and extracellular strucures).
Cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis. Apoptosis.
Essentials of molecular biology regarding nucleic acids, chromatin and chromosomes.
DNA replication and reparation. Genome organization.
Gene expression: from transcription to translation. Non coding RNAs.
Introduction to histology methods.
Classification and structure of tissues.
Epithelial tissue.
Connective tissue.
Nervous tissue.
Muscular tissue.
Exercises on biological data retrieval.
Virtual histology laboratory.
Practical laboratory: DNA extraction and agarose gel electrophoresis; preparation of bacterial cultures.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures plus practical and laboratory work.
Website with course material.

Lectures will be interactive and favor the participation of the students. Group activities will be carried out, partially under the supervision of the teacher.
