Syllabus
Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to introduce students at the processes and mechanisms that operate in living organisms, doing the groundwork to understand the detailed information they will receive in the subsequent more specialized biological courses. The knowledges the student will acquire concern the basic concepts of the:
1) biological molecules
2) organization of the cell
3) anatomy and physiology of animals and plants
4) reproduction and inheritance
5) life cycles
6) evolution
7) classification and phylogeny
8) biodiversity and its conservation

The skills that the student will start to acquire are:
1) the use of an appropriate scientific lexicon
2) the ability to synthesize and to express independent judgment
Examination methods: The acquired knowledge and skills will be assessed through a written test with 3 open questions, aimed at highlighting the knowledge, the scintific lexicon, the ability to synthesize and to critically discuss acquired during the course. This test is based on the topics discussed and discussed in class.
Assessment criteria: The criteria used to verify the acquired knowledges and skills are:
1) the understanding of the topics covered;
2) the critical ability to connect the acquired knowledges;
3) the completeness of the acquired knowledge;
4) the synthesis ability
5) the scientific lexical properties
Course unit contents: The topics of the program can be, shortly, divided into 6 major parts:

1) General characteristics of living systems (2 CFU)
Organization of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell. The Viruses. Definition of tissue, organ, system, organism. Cell division.
Form and function of organisms - Architecture of pluricellular organisms: body plan simmetry and organization.

2) Sexuality and reproduction (0,5 CFU)
Asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. The meiosis.

3) The transmission of hereditary characteristics (1 CFU)
Intraspecific variability. Mendel's laws. Chromosomal basis of heredity. Molecular basis of heredity. Examples of life cycles.

4) Evolution and adaptation (1 CFU)
The theory of evolution: Darwin and the new synthesis. Natural selection, sexual selection, genetic drift, neutrality. Speciation. Evolution and development.

5) Classification and phylogeny (0, 5 CFU)
Taxonomic categories. Taxonomic characters. The reconstruction of the evolutionary history of organisms: the phylogeny. Elements of systematic.

6) Ecology (1 CFU)
Biodiversity. Interactions among organisms and between organisms and environment at individual, population and community levels. In this context, case studies are used to highlight the effects of environmental changes (with particular reference to those of anthropic origin) on the conservation of populations / species.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The program topics are presented in lectures suported by ppt containing pictures, diagrams and videos. The teaching is interactive, with questions and study cases, to promote discussion and critical judgement in the classroom.
At the end of each topic students are given a short feedback test using the class page activated in the online resource, letsfeedback.com.
Periodic self-assessment tests are made available to students on the e-learning page (https://elearning.unipd.it/cmela/) of the course.
