Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of the Periodic Table of the Elements and its meaning, knowledge of the thermodynamic and kinetic reasons that underlie the why and how a chemical reaction occurs - General and Inorganic Chemistry (offered at the first semester).
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the students should have:
(1) understood the most important general aspects that are the basis of the chemistry of organic compounds (most common atoms, besides carbon, in organic chemistry and their electronic structure, chemical bonds and organic molecular structures, nomenclature, acid-base interactions, interactions nucleophile-electrophile, mechanisms of organic reactions, stereochemistry)
(2) understood the principles that govern the reactivity of the most common classes of monofunctional organic compounds, with examples drawn from molecular structures of interest in medicinal chemistry and materials science.
Examination methods: The final exam consists of a written test and an oral examination. The written test will be made of 30 multiple choice questions and 5 open questions (3 points for each correct answer; 0 point for each question left blank and -1 point for each wrong answer). The final grade will be normalized to 30. The grade of the written test will be valid for ONE YEAR. The oral examination will consist of 3 questions on the whole course program. The final grade will be the average score between the written and oral examination.
Assessment criteria: The preparation of the student will be evaluated on the basis of the understanding of the concepts presented during classes, and on the ability to apply them to the synthesis of mono-functional organic molecular structures (retro-synthesis).
Course unit contents: Current organic chemistry. Carbon: electronic structure, allotropes (graphite, diamond, fullerene) and other nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, graphene). Brief overview of covalent bonds (introduction to the theory of molecular orbitals, hybridization of carbon atomic orbitals: sp3, sp2, sp, length and bond strength). Acidity, basicity and pKa. Organic molecular structures and functional groups (nomenclature, physical properties, structural representation, conformational analysis). Alkenes and alkynes (structure, properties and reactivity.) Introduction to organic stereochemistry; the stereochemistry of addition reactions. Electronic delocalization and molecular orbitals (effect on stability, pKa and reactivity of organic molecules). Substitution and elimination reactions of alkyl halides (reactions of alcohols, ethers, epoxides, amines and sulfur compounds). Organometallic compounds (Grignard, organolithium compounds). Heck and Suzuki reactions. Examples of radical reactions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of lectures, in-class assignments, group exercises, case studies. Teaching will be carried out using the blackboard and through the use of slides to summarize the contents and discussion of the concepts that require the representation of molecular orbitals or the 3D structure of molecules. Simulations of the final exam will be also carried out with correction in class.
