Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic organic: basic properties of organic molecules (acidity/basicity, polarity, functional groups properties; chemistry and basic biochemistry: aminoacids and proteins (chemical and structural properties).
Target skills and knowledge: Learn how to couple Organic Chemistry-Biochemistry to Medicinal Chemistry.
Every year some the topics (drug-substate interaction, receptors,metabolism) are teached, while others (e.g. CNS, pain, antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs,...) are chosen by the students during the first lesson
Drug synthesis is also considered.
The student must be able to discuss the foundamental topics he asked by the examiner and also design a reasonable sinthetic pathway for the drugs involved.
Examination methods: Oral: two topics one chosen by the student the other by the examiner.
Assessment criteria: The acquisition of knowledge and skills described above will be evaluated.
Course unit contents: Introduction to medicinal chemistry. Pharmacology: Introduction to pharmacokinetics. Drug Metabolism, Phase I&II metabolic reactions. Computer Aided Drug Design, Combinatorial Chemistry and Drug Development and Production in Drug Discovery. Antitumor agents. Pain and related drugs: Anti-inflammatory (Steroids-glucocorticoids and NSAIDs)and Morphine derivatives in medicinal chemistry. Morphine, cocaine and drugs of abuse. Cardiovascular drugs. Antibiotics. CNS drugs.
