Prerequisites: Knowledge of the Periodic Table of the Elements; basic knowledge on thermodynamic and kinetic that regulate a chemical process; chemical bonds and Lewis structures; acid-base reactions, MO and VB theory; hybridized atomic orbitals
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the students will :
( 1 ) understand the most important and general aspects that are the basis of the chemistry of organic compounds (atoms relevant to the organic chemistry and their electronic structure , bonds and structure of the molecules , nomenclature , acid-base reactions, nucleophile - electrophile interactions, basic concepts concerning the mechanisms of organic reactions , stereochemistry)
( 2 ) understand the principles that govern the reactivity of the most common classes of organic compounds and functional group transformation and C-C bond formation via multistep synthesis.
Examination methods: the exam will consist in a written test (question with multiple/open answers), eventually followed by an oral colloquium.
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the preparation of the student will be based on the understanding of the different topics, on the acquisition of the concepts and the ability to apply them to the synthesis of mono-functional organic molecular structures.
Course unit contents: Atomic and Molecular Structure
The Basic rules for naming simple organic compounds: alkanes, cycloalkanes, haloalkanes, nitroalkanes, ethers, thioethers,alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds, carboxylic acides and their derivatives, ketones and aldehydes.
Molecular orbitals, Hybridization, chemical bonds (sigma, pi), three-dimentional structures, no covalent bonds, physical properties (mp, bp, solubility).
Conformation of organic molecules: alkanes and cycloalkanes. Stereochemistry, Symmetry, Chirality and Stereogenicity.
Descriptors of absolute and relative configuration.
Organic reactions and reaction mechanisms,
Nucleophilic Substitution and Elimination Reactions (aliphatic halides and alcohols)(SN1, SN2, E1, E2), mechanisms and stereochemistry. Electrophilic additions to C=C: regiochemistry and stereochemistry, mechanisms. Brønsted acid addition,rReactions involving cyclic intermediates; Reduction and oxidation (double/triple C-C bonds and alcohols)
Concepts in organic synthesis, retrosynthetic approach, multistep synthesis.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of lectures and exercises. Tests of self-evaluation will be provided Simulations of the final exam will be also provided Some lessons may be carried out in English by mother-tongue trainers.
