Prerequisites:

Fundamentals of mathematics. 
Target skills and knowledge:

The course aims at the acquisition of the basic knowledge of
Mechanics and of the the ability of solving
quantitatively exercises on the same topics. 
Examination methods:

Written test which implies the solution of exercises and subsequent (optional) oral test on the contents of the course listed in the program. 
Assessment criteria:

Check the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and
ability to solve quantitatively application exercises. 
Course unit contents:

Physical quantities and units of measurement. Basics of vector calculus.
Kinematics of a point particle: velocity and acceleration;
linear motion; motion
in a plane and in space; freefalling bodies; circular motion; basics of
relative motion. Dynamics of a point particle: the principle of inertia and
the forces; Newton's laws; static equilibrium and reaction forces;
weight force, elastic forces and harmonic motion, friction forces;
inclined plan; simple pendulum. Work and energy,
power, kinetic energy theorem ; conservative forces,
potential energy and conservation of mechanical energy. Angular momentum,
central forces, the gravitational force. Dynamics of a system of particles:
external and internal forces, center of mass, center of mass theorem,
momentum; moment of force, angular momentum theorem; center of mass
reference system and its properties, collisions.
Dynamics of rigid bodies: rotation around a fixed axis, moment
of inertia. Fluid mechanics: pressure, static equilibrium, Stevin's law,
Archimedes' principle; steady flow of a fluid, ideal fluids,
Bernoulli's theorem.
