Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: Understand the main scientific methods applied in psychological research. Learn how to design a research, to implement it, to collect, analyze and interpret research data. Critically understand characteristics of both qualitative and quantitative methods in psychological research.
Examination methods: Written exam with open questions concerning both theoretical topics and exercises to be solved. The exam lasts 2 hours. The possibility of an optional oral integration will be provided, in the form of a research project to be presented to the class.
Assessment criteria: Specific and critical knowledge about research methods in psychology will be evaluated as well as the ability of understanding and applying the correct methods in specific situations.
Course unit contents: Psychology as a science;
Research Ethics;
Phenomena, models, and theories in Psychology;
The concepts of sample, variable, and relationship between variables;
Measurement in psychology;
Basics of statistical analysis;
Experimental research designs;
Quasi-experimental research designs;
Non-experimental research designs and single case studies;
Validity: internal, external, construct and statistical.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal and interactive lessons, with individual and group exercises.
