Prerequisites: Basic knowledge on general Cognitive functions like: perception, attention, language and memory
Target skills and knowledge: 1. To provide a psychological perspective of human development from conception through late life.
2. To introduce the theories and research practices of developmental psychology.
3. To encourage critical evaluation of research in developmental psychology which you may apply to other disciplines.
4. To make the principles of developmental psychology relevant to your own life and experience.
Examination methods: The exam is conducted in oral form in English and questions will be formulated (usually 4- 6 questions) both on the course content and on reasoning on possible critical situations of development during the life span. The exam lasts on average 15 to 30 minutes.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on the basis of the final mark to the oral exam plus the evaluation of the presentation/discussions given by the students in the class
Course unit contents: This course is designed to provide a broad introduction to the major areas of interest in developmental psychology. We will explore topics such as biological, cognitive, emotional, and social development, by conceptualizing the individual as a whole at different stages of the lifespan. With an emphasis on the scientific nature of psychology, I will present common research methodologies employed by developmental psychologists. Primary attention will be devoted to the period of infancy through adolescence with some coverage of adulthood, and late life.
I will focus on questions such as: What psychological changes occur during infancy, childhood, and adolescence? What psychological processes drive the development of children? What are the psychological, neurobiological, and genetic/environmental causes of developmental disorders, such as language impairment, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and dyslexia? What can psychologists do to promote healthy development in neurotypical individuals and support development among individuals with developmental disorders?
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Class sessions will usually consist of short lectures period followed by a student led group presentation and discussion of the weekly readings. In addition, we will visit different labs on campus to learn more about the methods and issues of developmental psychology. The course will be entirely in English
Additional notes about suggested reading: Scientific papers, essays and video will be suggested in addition to the text book. I strongly encourage you to talk with me individually throughout the semester if you have any questions concerning course material or about how you are doing in the class. If you are having problems in the course, do not wait too long to talk with us, come early in the semester while there is still time to improve. Of course, you are also welcome to come speak with us even if you are not having difficulties but are just interested in the material and would like further information.
