Target skills and knowledge:

The course aims to provide basic computer skills. As an example, at the end of the course the student should be able to: 1) appropriately start up and shut down the computer; 2) use the operating system and start applications; 3) perform basic functions of file management; perform basic functions related to: 4) word processing, 5) spreadsheet use and, 6), multimedia slideshow presentations; 7) manage print settings and print documents; 8) use the Internet and the e-mail; manage 9) basic security, 10) privacy, 11) ergonomics and, 12), energy saving issues. |
Examination methods:

Written examination only, constituted by, at maximum, 40 multiple-choice questions dealing with skills from 1) to 12). The exam will require no more than 40 minutes.
The MOODLE platform will also be a viable option in order to collect all the assessment information. |
Assessment criteria:

Student's assessment will be based on the mastery of key topics, concepts and basic technical language. |

- Hardware and Software.
- Windows.
- Working with programs.
- File management (with reference to MS Windows).
- Word processing (with reference to MS Word).
- Spreadsheets (with reference to MS Excel).
- Slideshow presentations (with reference to MS PowerPoint).
- Printing.
- Using e-mail.
- Accessing the Internet.
- Best practices in terms of energy saving, computer security, privacy and ergonomics. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

The course is structured along a set of lectures, exercises (both individually and team-based) on selected functions, concepts and cases, and group discussions.
Active participation is mandatory for all students attending the course. |
