Prerequisites: The course requires basic knowledge of chemistry and biology, as specified in the entry requirements.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is proposed as an incentive and guide for learning the basics of biology, with particular reference to the cell biology. Such knowledge is necessary for an understanding of the topics in the Psychobiology and Genetics courses.
In detail, the course aims to present the organization of living organisms and the processes that operate in biological systems, laying the necessary foundations for understanding the in-depth information that will be received in subsequent courses with biological contents.

The knowledge that the student will acquire concerns the basic concepts related to:
1) biological molecules
2) organization of the cell
3) metabolic processes
4) synaptic transmission
5) mechanisms of inheritance

The skills that the student will start to acquire are:
1) the use of appropriate scientific terminology
2) the ability to make connections
3) the ability to synthesize
4) the ability to solve problems
5) autonomous judgement
Examination methods: Written (PC-based) test with 33 multiple-choice questions. Duration: 1 hour.

The exam is designed to verify all covered topics, thus ascertaining the knowledge of the entire teaching program. The questions are designed to ascertain the ability to reason and make connections. Part of the questions ascertains the ability to solve specific problems concerning metabolism, cellular communication and genetic inheritance in living organisms.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria are designed to ensure that the student has consolidated the knowledge of the topics covered during the course, the terminology and the possible applications. In addition, these criteria will evaluate the student's ability to operate the connections among different topics.
Course unit contents: Introduction to the course. Atoms and molecules. Biological molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins. Chemical reactions and enzymes. Cell organization. Gene regulation, transcription and translation. Cellular organelles and metabolism. Cell cycle and mitosis. Nerve cells. Membrane transport. Transmission of the nerve impulse. Chemical and electrical synapses. Development of the nervous system. Genome organization. Genetic mutations. Meiosis and reproduction. Epigenetics. Population genetics. Behavioral genetics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is organized in lectures whose contents are presented in Power Point with the help of images, schemas and videos. The teaching is interactive, with questions put in the classroom to the students, to promote discussion and critical thinking during the lesson.
At the end of each lesson, self-assessment tests are made available to the students on the Moodle e-learning page of the course.

- ability to solve practical problems concerning the analysis of metabolism, communication and genetic inheritance in living organisms.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The audio-visual material projected during the lectures will be available on the Moodle E-learning platform from the day of the lesson. The reference textbook is "Basi Biologiche e Genetiche dell'Attività Psichica" (Piccin).
