Syllabus
Prerequisites: General chemistry and inorganic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Understand the IUPAC rules for the nomenclature of organic molecules;
understand the relation between chemical bonds and molecular structure;
understand the relation between molecular structure and physico-chemical properties;
knowledge of the main functional groups present in organic molecules and their characteristics;
knowledge of the main reactions in organic chemistry and their mechanism;
knowledge of some molecules of biochemical interest and use of databases to get information.
Examination methods: written exam
duration: 1 hour
There will be 2 exams per examination period (5-6 per year)
Assessment criteria: The following capabilities will be evaluated:
be able to give a IUPAC name to an organic molecule and vice versa;
be able to classify an organic molecule based on the functional groups present;
be able to anticipate the physical-chemical properties based on the molecular structure;
be able to anticipate the main chemical reactions that can occur between molecules;
be able to describe and find information on a natural molecule with therapeutic activity.
Course unit contents: The chemical bond in organic molecules and the molecular structure of hydrocarbons.
The nomenclature and properties of alkanes (weak bonds, melting/boiling points, isomerism),
The nomenclature and properties of alkenes (cis/trans, E/Z stereoisomers). The nomenclature and properties of alkynes.
The chemical bond in unsaturated conjugates hydrocarbons. Aromatic compounds: structure and reactivity. Stereoisomerism. Enantiomers, diastereoisomers and meso compounds. Stereogenic atoms. Absolute and relative configurations. Optical activity. Separation of enantiomers. Main functional groups, nomenclature, properties (effects on water solubility, hydrogen bonds, melting/boiling points, polarity, acidity) and reactivity. Alkyl halides. Alcohols, ethers, thiols, sulfides. Aldehydes and chetones. Carboxylic acids and derivatives. Amines, heterocyclic compounds, introductin to the aminoacids. Introduction to the carbohydrates. Several examples of natural organic compounds will be also presented.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 56 hours of class room teaching
Time will be dedicated to problem/exercise solving
During the course students may use simple chemical models and video to show molecular structure, conformation and reactivity.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The slides that are used during the course are made available to the students, including the exercises. On line tests will be available in the e-learning.
