Prerequisites: Basic concept of mathematical calculus, linear algebra and geometry.
Target skills and knowledge: Basis concepts of numerical analysis e MATLAB programming language. The student will study basic concepts related to the formulation and ensuing numerical solution of mathematical problems arising from engineering practice. Will acquire competences in the application of numerical methods to the solution of engineering problems and in the quality analysis of the resulting approximations.
Examination methods: Written test on numerical analysis concepts and Matlab laboratory test.
Assessment criteria: Mainly based on the knowledge of the studens and her/his capability to attack calculus numerical problems in the theorical and practical aspects.
Course unit contents: The computer hardware. Machine arithmetic. Well-posedness and ill-conditioning of a mathematical problem. Consistency, stability and convergence of a numerical scheme. Zeros of nonlinear functions. Polynomial interpolation and approximation. Numerical integration (trapezoidal, Cavalieri-Simpson rule, Richardson extrapolation, Gauss rule).
Solution of linear systems by direct and iterative methods.
Introduction to numerical methods for the solution of Initial Value Ordinary Differential Equations (Euler and Cranck Nicolson schemes. MATLAB as programming language.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lectures and programming laboratories.
