Target skills and knowledge: The acquisition of the main concepts concerning chemistry and the relationship between the microstructure and the properties of materials, with particular reference to materials used in civil engineering.
Examination methods: Traditional: written exam on all the program or divided into two partial tests.
Assessment criteria: Written exam (multiple choice questions, exercises and one essay on a topic selected by the professor dealing with cement, concrete or steel).
The assessment will be based on the student's understanding of the topics, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them autonomously.
Course unit contents: Science and Chemistry of Materials: Atomic structure and chemical bonds. Periodic table of the elements. Recycling of materials. Influence of chemical bonding on the properties of materials. Amorphous and crystalline state. Crystallization and crystal defects. Influence of crystal defects on properties. Mechanical properties: elastic and plastic deformation, fracture. Testing methods and norms. Phase diagrams. Solid solutions. Chemical reactions and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters influencing them.
Metals: Fe-C alloys. Fe-C phase diagram. Cast iron. Microstructure and properties of steel. Different types of steel. Thermal treatments. Corrosion and protection of metallic structures. Electrochemical corrosion mechanism. Types of corrosion and corrosion prevention. Stainless steels. European norms.
Plastics: Polymerization chemical reactions. Microstructure of plastic materials. Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Properties and degradation of plastic materials. Applications of polymers in building engineering. European norms.
Ceramics: Traditional ceramics (tiles and bricks). Microstructure, chemical composition, characteristics, properties and applications. The European legislation for tiles and bricks. Glasses: microstructure and properties. The use of glass in buildings. European norms.
Cement and Concrete: lime, gypsum, mortars. Chemical reactions for setting and hardening. Portland cement. Hydration reactions, setting and hardening. Hydration heat. Microstructure, porosity and mechanical strength of hardened cement paste. Chemical degradation of hardened cement paste. Special cements. European norms. Concrete: general concepts, rheological properties, mix-design. Aggregates: properties and the European legislation. Properties of fresh and hardened concrete. Chemical additives for concrete. Durability of concrete structures. Mix design. European norms.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lecture-style instruction. Teaching using Powerpoint slides, videos and analysis of samples brought to class by the professor.
Individual study on copy of slides given by the professor, and classroom discussion.
