Syllabus
Prerequisites: Requirements for admission to the examination:
General chemistry and principles of biochemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Educational goals:

Farm animal production techniques

1) Understanding of the importance of production techniques and managerial strategies to ensure the safety of food of animal origin.
2) Development of skills in critical analysis aimed at the prevention and resolution of problems of hygiene that may impair the health of primary production.

Structures for Animal Production

1) Acquisition of the basic knowledge and critical view concerning the animal housing structures and the food processing plants.
Examination methods: Final examination: a written exam consisting of free-answer questions (4), multiple-choice questions (60) and one exercise.
Time available: 2.5 hours
Assessment criteria: The student evaluation will be based on the completeness and correctness of the answers to the questions in the test.
Course unit contents: Program:

Farm animal production techniques (6 ECTS)

1. Overview of Animal Production and strategies to achieve the "zero hunger" (0.3 ECTS)
2. Reproduction techniques in farm animals (0.4 ECTS)
3. Nutrients and feeds (0.5 ECTS)
4. Energy metabolism and requirements for maintenance and production purposes (0.5 ECTS)
5. Adaptation to the environment (0.1 ECTS)
6. Digestion and absorption of feed in ruminant and non ruminant animals (1 ECTS)
7. Growth and development (0.5 ECTS)
8. Poultry: eggs and meat (0.5 ECTS)
9. Beef cattle: breed, feeding and management (0.5 ECTS)
10. Dairy cattle: lactation, breeds, feeding and management (1 ECTS)
11. Swine: breeds, feeding and management (0.5 ECTS)
12. Notes on other species (0.2 ECTS)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures (72 hours) and practice (10 hours, into 4 shifts) which include visits to dairy, beef cattle and goat farms.
