Prerequisites: Mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide students:
- The knowledge of the agroecosystems, and on the relationships between natural factors and crop response;
- The strategies on crop management techniques;
- The tools to address the problems related to the impacts of organic plant production on the agroecosystem.
Examination methods: Written examination, questions with different scores.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will take into account the understanding of the topics covered during the course,and the student's ability to apply independently the proposed methodologies in different contexts.
Course unit contents: Credits 1 & 2:
The agro-ecosystem, its components and the effect on crops . Radiation, rain, temperature, wind, evapotranspiration.
Credits 3 & 4:
Soil tillage practices: types (ploughing, digging, scarifying, weeding, harrowing, minimum and zero tillage, etc.) and effects on soil properties.
Irrigation and drainage. The soil water content, crop water requirement, time of irrigation intervention, irrigation methods and water saving strategies. Water quality. Water use efficiency.
Credits 5 & 6:
The cropping systems. Monocultures, crop rotations, consociation and intercropping systems. Methods to assess crop productivity and sustainability of organic farming systems.

c. Field activities;
d. Technical visits to organic farms
