Syllabus
Prerequisites: To follow the course, the students are supposed to be familiar with the following topics:
- Equations and inequalities of first and second degree;
- Equation of the line, parabola and circle;
- Power properties.
Target skills and knowledge: The curse aims at providing the mathematical tools for:
- Study of functions;
- Differential and integral calculus for functions of one real variable;
- Calculation of an area using integration;
- Solving linear systems;
- Solution of real-world problems by differential equations.
Examination methods: The final exam is written. It will eventually be followed by a brief oral exam.
Assessment criteria: In the written exam the students are required to solve some exercises related to the topics lectured.
Course unit contents: - Basic notions and notations;
- The notion of function, elementary functions;
- Limits of functions and sequences;
- Study of derivatives;
- Study of techniques to identify maximum and minimum points, increasing and decreasing functions, convex and concave functions;
- Study of a function;
- Definite and indefinite integrals;
- Methods for solving linear systems;
- Diferential equations.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lectures and exercises.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Notes related to the lessons will be given to the students. It is also possible (though not strictly necessary) to use the books suggested below.
