Syllabus
Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: By studying structure, characteristics and reactivity of the main inorganic and organic compounds, a student will be provided with the scientific knowledge required to understand chemical phenomena. This knowledge will give the possibility to recognize the role of chemistry in many areas (e.g., health, environment, agriculture, new materials) and to fully benefit from the scientific literature where chemical notions are used.
Examination methods: Written test.
Course unit contents: 1 CFU: nomenclature of inorganic compounds; periodic table of the elements; atomic structure; chemical bonds.
2 CFU: chemical equations; the gaseous, solid and liquid state; properties of the solutions.
3 CFU: an outline of thermodynamics; acid-base equilibria; solubility equilibria.
4 CFU: basics of electrochemistry; basic notions of inorganic chemistry.
5 CFU: linear and cyclic, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons; alkyl halides; chirality.
6 CFU: alcohols, ethers and thiols; aromatic compounds; amines, aldehydes and ketones.
7 CFU: carboxylic acids, anhydrides, esters and amides; organic polymers, biodegradable plastics.
8 CFU: mono-, di- e polysaccharides; amino acids and proteins; nucleic acids; lipids; soap and synthetic detergents.
Classroom exercises and laboratory experiments (4 h).
