Syllabus
Prerequisites: Linguistic abilities in German language at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Target skills and knowledge: Competences in the production and comprehension of written and oral texts at C1 level.
Ability to formulate metalinguistic reflections on advanced structures of standard German language, also by establishing comparisons with Italian grammar.
Ability to write a commented résumé of a literary, scientific or journalistic text.
Specific knowledge in German history and theory of translation as well as in the most relevant contemporary translation practices.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a translation portfolio, a written exam, and an oral exam.

The translation portfolio (two short texts, max. 10 pages) will be prepared in consultation with the module convenor. It must be sent per email as a PDF file before the end of the module.

The written exam (4 hours) requires the students to summarize and comment on an essay concerning aspects of German literature and culture.

Both the portfolio and the written exam must obtain a positive evaluation in order for the student to be admitted to the oral exam (20 minutes). This consists of a short presentation by the student and a conversation at academic level in German. Furthermore, the oral exam will assess the acquisition of theoretical knowledge as well as the ability to read and translate a short passage from German into Italian.
Assessment criteria: The exam will evaluate the linguistic abilities in German at C1 level, as well as translation competences and the ability to engage in metalinguistic reflections.
Course unit contents: Contents:

The part of the course taught by language experts is aimed at developing the students’ written and oral competence in German language at C1 level. In particular, skills in translation, academic conversation and written production will be trained, in order to prepare the students to the final exam.

The module held by the convenor will explore questions related to the history and theory of translation in German culture, and will focus on contemporary approaches and strategies in translation.

The students will also be required to read either Uwe Timm’s novella “Die Entdeckung der Currywurst” or the edited volume “Eure Heimat ist unser Albtraum” in preparation for the oral exam.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course involves traditional lectures and interactive seminars combined with practical exercises.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Further information on learning materials:

Most learning materials will be handed out in class or uploaded on the e-learning platform.

Students who are not able to attend the courses are requested to contact the module convenor well in advance of the exam.
