Prerequisites: Since the course focuses essentially on the study of phonology, the knowledge of the fundamental notions of phonetics is a prerequisite for the students. In particular, phonetic description, classification of sounds, as well as the system of phonetic transcription of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) are considered as acquired knowledge.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is for the students to acquire knowledge of the most relevant aspects of phonological analysis of natural languages and of the bases of the main theoretical approaches to phonology used nowadays. The focus will be on the issues deriving from the theoretical and empirical analysis of the phonological systems, as well as on their structure and functioning.
The general framework of reference is Generative Phonology, in its different developments.
Examination methods: Verification of knowledge and expected abilities is carried out through a final written exam of the maximum duration of 2 hours. The test consists of open questions aiming at assessing the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and exercises / structured questions concerning the application of tools of analysis and of description presented during the course.
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the students' preparation will be based on a) understanding of the course topics, b) acquisition of concepts and methodologies, c) ability to apply acquired knowledge in an autonomous way. Special attention will be given in the assessment to the argumentative capacity of the student in addressing and elaborating the topics proposed.
Course unit contents: The course is structured in two parts:
1) Notion of “phoneme” and “allophone” (from the Prague School to Generative Grammar)
2) a. Levels of phonological representation. Relations among levels.
2) b. Representation of phonological processes : phonological rules. Interactions between processes and ranking of rules.
3) Theory of phonological features: distinctiveness, natural classes, representation of phonological processes, universality.
II Part
4) “Non-linear” representation of phonology. Autosegmental theory and “feature geometry”.
5) Introduction to "Element Theory".
6) Constraints based phonology: introduction to Optimality Theory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of 42 hours of lectures, 21 of which taught by professor Laura Vanelli and 21 by doctor Tommaso Balsemin. Lectures are open to involvement and discussion with the students. Attending the classes is highly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Students enrolled in the Linguistics LM Course are highly recommended to attend the classes.
For students enrolled in LM Courses in European and American Languages and Literature, as well as in Modern languages for International Communication and Cooperation, that intend to sustain the exam without attending the course, or for Linguistics student who are not able to attend, a partially different programme is foreseen than the one above presented. The reference texts are:
