Syllabus
Prerequisites: No specific knowledge is required.
Target skills and knowledge: The student must become aware of the main lines of the Eastern Christian traditions as emerged between the second and ninth centuries in the East of the Roman Empire. The course is particularly focused on Syriac Christianity.
Examination methods: The exam will take place in oral form with discussion of one or more topics covered in the lessons and on the reference texts
Assessment criteria: We will evaluate the accuracy of the preparation, the clarity of the presentation, the understanding of the topics covered, the ability to present problems in a critical way.
Course unit contents: The course consists in two sections.

1. Peoples and languages ​​of the Christian East.
2. The Syriac tradition, in particular the Church of the East during the first millennium, and the era of Patriarch Timothy I (780-823). In this second section we will present the complicate relation between christian schools and monasticism during the first Islamic period.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The lessons will be mostly frontal. Slides, images and conceptual maps will be used. The analyzed sources will be projected. All these materials will be present in moodle with the access key provided during the lesson.
