Prerequisites: No specific knowledge is required.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to present the evolution of the concept of holiness in the history of late antique and medieval Christianity and the main historical forms of hagiographic literature in this period of time, through a quick presentation of the most recent scientific debate on the historical religious concept of holiness in the biblical and Christian tradition, and above all through the reading of some passages taken from hagiographic collections, commented by the support of historical and philological instruments. The student must be able to critically address the literary sources proposed and to enlighten the cultural milieus in which they arose.
Examination methods: The exam will take place in oral form on the books adopted and on the sources read in class.
Assessment criteria: We will evaluate the accuracy of the preparation, the clarity of the presentation, the understanding of the topics covered, the ability to present problems in a critical way.
Course unit contents: The course consists in a presentation of the main topics and texts of the Christian hagiographic literature and the evolution of the concept of holiness between the late antiquity and the Middle Ages, to which a presentation of some extracts from hagiographic texts will follow.
In detail the course will be structured in two parts:
1. Saints and holiness in ancient and medieval Christianity: introduction and dominant themes
2. The parable of Syrian-Eastern Christian holiness in Sassanid Iran.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The lessons will start at 9:00 AM, and will be mostly frontal. Slides, images and conceptual maps will be used. The analyzed sources will be provided by the teacher. All these materials will be present in moodle with the access key provided during the lesson.
