Prerequisites: There are no preconditions for this course, because the texts that will be treated will be accompanied by an Italian translation.
Target skills and knowledge: The course intends to purvey knowledge of the cultural, historical and social developments that have shaped the Slovene cultural area, seen from the point of view from an emergent culture exposed to pressure and attraction that emanate from surrounding cultures.
Examination methods: The exam will be oral and will last about 20 minutes. It takes the form of a discussion of one or more points touched upon during the lectures. The student will be specifically asked to explain at which point of the historical development one can speak of a Slovene intellectual culture. At least one question will deal with one of the three Slovene literary works that the student will have read in translation.
Assessment criteria: For the evaluation the following criteria obtain:
1) knowledge on the subject presented during the lectures;
2) knowledge and understanding of the concepts and methods discussed;
3) the capability to apply this knowledge in an autonomous and conscient way
4) logical discourse capability, that is the student's answers should be pertinent with respect to the questions; he should be able to develop 'a critical discourse of his own' that is pertinent, clear, effective and personal.
Course unit contents: The course, with the title "An Overview of Slovene Literature", presents the various historical periods in the development of Slovene literature. Specifically the following themes will be discussed:
- the Medieval manuscripts;
- the publications of religious and lay nature from the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation;
- the National Revival;
- the national poet Prešeren;
- the origins of the Slovene novel;
- main 20th century literary currents.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The lectures intend to let the students participate and to elicit discussion, taking as point of departure the text pieces that serve to exemplify the problems under discussion. The importance of reading in the original is stressed, supported, of course, by a translated version. Presence at the lectures is highly desirable.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The texts for the course will be uploaded in Moodle, whereas the literary works in translation can be found in the library of the Slavistic Section, on the ground floor.
