Prerequisites: Fluent English and good knowledge of the English literary canon.
Interest in the English-speaking world, contemporary cultures and literatures, postcolonial critical theory, gender studies.
Target skills and knowledge: Students will be asked to study some of the most important critical contributions offered by postcolonial thinking, cultural studies criticism and gender studies; to appropriate in an active way the tools of critical theory and criticism; to learn how to apply them to the reading of the primary texts analyzed during the course; to develop the ability to analyze the literary text and produce critical and cultural reflections; to study the cultural and historical contexts related to the primary texts in the syllabus.
Examination methods: Oral exam at the end of the course. The final assessment takes into account individual or group presentations and active participation in class (good class work contributes to the final mark).
Assessment criteria: The students will be tested according to the following:
- appropriation of theoretical perspectives and methodological tools;
- ability to apply theory to the reading of the primary texts analyzed during the course;
- ability to analyze literary production and produce critical and cultural reflection;
- knowledge of primary texts in the syllabus;
- knowledge of the cultural and historical contexts related to the primary texts.
The first part of the course offers an introduction to postcolonial critical theory and gender studies, from which contemporary Anglophone women's writings may be profitably approached. It deals with the relationships between the imperial centre and its (ex)colonies, it investigates moments of appropriation and subversion of European culture in the post-1945 period, it discusses questions of patriarchal, colonial, race and power relationships, and analyses literary works by women writers that speak about urgent issues of contemporary time.
The second part of the course offers critical readings of poetic and narrative texts by women in/from different Anglophone contexts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, seminars, active participation of students in class, oral presentations on agreed topics.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The syllabus focuses on poems and novels written by prominent Anglophone women writers.
