Syllabus
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge is required. Students are expected to participate actively and constantly to the lessons, asking questions, working in-group, offering their personal experience if relevant to the argument discussed during the lessons.
Target skills and knowledge: Students will learn Aesthetic in Islamic Art by discussing in classroom Arab sources translated in English. After considering a series of case studies presented by a lecture of the teacher, students will understand the relation among Pre-Islamic Art in the Arabic peninsula and the adoption of other artistic languages at the origin of Islamic Art thanks to the contact with Byzantine and Sassanid Art. Students will understand the Western approach to Islamic Art compromised by colonial and postcolonial thinking. They will appreciate the diffusion of Islamic ornament and objects in Byzantine Empire and Norman Sicily.
Writing short texts about case studies chosen at the beginning of the course, students will improve their personal skills in reading visual documents, in writing scientific papers with a selected bibliography, using the main disciplinary data bank.
Examination methods: The examination of knowledge will be organized in different steps:
1) One written exam will be done to verify the comprehension of the methodological approach to Islamic Art.
2) During the second part of the course, the students will present a research about an artistic document assigned at the beginning of the course. The research will be written and presented with a power point.
3) One oral exam will be done to discuss a paper chosen among those shared in Moodle (peer review).
Assessment criteria: Will be assessed the factual (notions) and procedural competences acquired by students during the course. Will be appreciate their active participation to the lessons, the use of a disciplinary language, and the completion of a fine written paper in which they are expected to have considered a large bibliography with a critical approach.
Course unit contents: The course begins from the Pre-Islamic sources in the Arabic Peninsula. After some lessons to offer a methodological approach to students, we will analyze some case studies from 8th century to the year 1250.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is done by 42 hours of lessons held in English, structured in part as lectures by the teacher, in part as active-learning and cooperative-learning-based lessons. In this part of the course students will prepare a written text to present using power point to the class. The teacher will correct each phase and evaluate this part of the learning process in order to assess the complete contribution offered by each students in the learning activities.
Additional notes about suggested reading: We will use constantly the digital platform Moodle to share the material to study.
