Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of general microbiology and immunology
Target skills and knowledge: Basic knowledge about biology, virulence and pathogenicity of bacteria and viruses with medical relevance. Laboratory activity relative to microbiology diagnostic techiques.
Examination methods: Written with quiz and open questions
Course unit contents: Biological characteristics and virulence factors of: Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Mycobacterium, Neisseria, Enterobacteriaceae,Clostridium, Treponema, Borrelia, Leptospira, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia.
Structural, replicative and biological characteristics of animal viruses: Picornavirus, Herpesvirus, Orthomyxovirus, Retrovirus, Hepadnavirus and other viral agents causing hepatitis. Arbovirus. Ebola virus.
Host-parassite relationship and pathogenesis of microbial infections. Resident microbiota. Pathogenic mechanisms.
General principles of diagnosis for infectious diseases. Prevention, microbial infections therapy and monitoring of antimicrobial molecules efficiency.
