Target skills and knowledge: The course is multidisciplinary and takes its place at the interface between the inorganic chemistry and biology and his purpose is to introduce the students to the principles of the coordination chemistry in the biological systems.
The course is divided in three parts: a) Principles of coordination chemistry. b) Study of the role of inorganic elements essential for the biological functions. c) The radioactivity: unstable nuclides and radioactive emissions, applications in medical diagnostics and therapy.
Examination methods: oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the preparation of the student will be based on the critical learning and on the personal insight of the studied topics and on the ability to personally deepen through bibliographic research in international scientific publications.
Course unit contents: Fundamentals of Inorganic solution chemistry. Classification of metal ions and ligands: hard-soft, acid-base (HSAB) theory. Stability constants. Stabilization of oxidation states. Ligand field stabilization energy. Kinetics and mechanisms of reactions involving metal complexes. Electron-transfer reactions. Fundamentals of kinetics and thermodynamics (rate laws and rate constants). Equilibrium. Catalysis. Fundamentals of biochemistry (biological ligands, nucleotides, proteins). Metal uptake and transmembrane ion transport. Transport and storage in vivo. Metalloproteins and metalloenzymes( oxygen carriers, hydrolases, hydro-lyases). Redox chemistry (prosthetic centers, cofactors, coenzymes, electron-transfer pathways in respiratory metabolism).
Metal complexes as diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
Radioactivity: types of radioactive decay, radioactive decay rates, the chart of the nuclides, radiocarbon dating, applications of radioactivity in medicine.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The lectures will be held with the support of slides.
Students are invited to be present during the lectures and take notes as the existing texts are very wide and dispersive and should serve only as a possible deepening of the topics covered in the classroom.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The slides of the lectures will be made available to students.
