Prerequisites: An adequate knowledge of the fundamental constructs of General Psychology (among others perception, attention, memory, emotions). The knowledge of the anatomical-physiological bases of the central nervous system is very useful. Furthermore, the knowledge of written English is very useful.
It is preferable to have followed at least the first part of the Course "Basi funzionali e cognitive dell'intersoggettivitĂ ".
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the student with a basic knowledge of the electroencephalographic signal, in the domains of time and frequency, of their possible use in different research contexts (mainly basic cognitive psychology and social psychology). Particular attention will be paid to the themes of empathy and social interaction. For this purpose the course will be divided into different moments, as more fully illustrated in the "Contents" section, providing one theoretical frontal lesson, a part of exercises in small groups in the electroencephalography laboratory and a practical part of learning the basic procedures of analysis of an electroencephalographic signal.
Examination methods: The exam will take place during the last lesson of the course and will focus on the contents addressed during the Laboratory, with particular reference to the application and operational components of the same. The modalities of the exam will therefore be in line with the methodologies used during the lessons and will aim at verifying the learning of these techniques.

In particular, the exam will involve the analysis of an electroencephalographic signal.
Assessment criteria: Since the Laboratory consists of a professionalizing and experiential teaching formula, the evaluation criteria of the student's learning will focus specifically on these aspects, with particular reference to the empirical and operational implications of the tools, methods and techniques presented during the Laboratory.
Further elements that will contribute to defining the final evaluation will be the active participation during the lessons, the activities carried out autonomously in the application of the contents presented, the participation in the working group.

In short, the exam will aim to assess the student's knowledge of the content presented during the course.
Course unit contents: The course "Electrophysiology of cognitive processes, intersubjectivity and neural resonance" is part of the CdS Laboratories in Clinical Developmental Psychology, which constitute an educational formula delivered in small groups of students (maximum 20).

The course will be divided in the following moments:

- Initial introductory theoretical lesson: Introduction to the basic concepts of electroencephalogram (EEG), event-related potentials (ERP), related oscillators; main components of ERP, functional meaning of some correlated oscillators
- Discussion in the classroom on possible experimental designs with ERPs and implementation strategies based on the ideas and experimental hypotheses formulated by the students
- Electroencephalography laboratory exercises to learn the electrode placement procedure for the registration of the EEG and the electroaculogram
- Intensive use of a software to analyze an electroencephalographic signal

Extensive reference will be made to the literature of the fileds of cognitive processes (in particular attention and visual memory of work) and of social neuroscience (in particular resonance and empathy processes).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The attendance of at least 70% of the lessons is required.
Work in the classroom and in groups is an integral part of the teaching of the Laboratory and is one of the learning activities, alongside the verification of the individual learning. Students who for exceptional reasons are unable to attend are advised to contact the teacher in a timely manner to agree alternative activities.

After an introductory part of a mainly theoretical nature, the teacher will supervise the laboratory activity and the practical activity.
