Syllabus
Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of Psychobiology and Cognitive psychology is required.
Target skills and knowledge: Upon completion of this course, students will have acquired comprehensive knowledge of the neuropsychological signs/symptoms of the main acquired brain disorders and their differential diagnosis. More precisely, students should be able to:

- Define the various sub-disciplines of neuropsychology.
- Define the models proposed by Luria and Mesulam and use them as diagnostic tools.
- Identify and diagnose visual field deficits.
- Identify and diagnose disorders of the ventral stream (object agnosias, prosopagnosias, color agnosias).
- Identify and diagnose disorders of the dorsal stream (Balint-Holmes syndrome, akinetopsia, spatial agnosia, constructional apraxia, neglect).
- Identify and diagnose disorders of language processing (aphasias. alexias, and agraphias).
- Identify and diagnose disorders of voluntary, complex and purposeful action (i.e., the apraxias: ideomotor, ideative, conceptual, callosal).
- Identify and diagnose disorders of number processing (transcoding, "number sense") and calculus.
- Identify and diagnose disorders of memory (short-term and long-term).
- Identify and diagnose prefrontal dysexecutive syndromes (lateral, mesial, orbital).
- Perform differential diagnosis among the abovementioned neuropsychological disorders
Examination methods: The exam will be written (duration: 30 minutes) and it will take place in rooms with specially-equipped computers. The exam consists of 31 multiple-choice questions. Each question will be associated with four answers. Only one answer will be the correct one. There will be two alternative modalities for sustaining the exam (students should select one and only one modality):

Modality 1. Study of the handbook: Manuale di Neuropsicologia (a cura di Vallar e Papagno, Seconda edizione, 2011, Bologna: il Mulino). The specific chapters that should be studied will be announced on the Moodle website of the course.

Modality 2. Study of specific materials concerning the course (student notes, slides, articles and book chapters; all these materials -with the exception of student notes- will be available from the Moodle website of the course).
Assessment criteria: 1. Ability to accurately learn theoretical notions (models of reference) and practical issues (diagnosis) regarding clinical neuropsychology.
2. Ability to observe and classify the signs/symptoms of the various neuropsychological disorders.
2. Ability to perform differential neuropsychological diagnoses.
Course unit contents: 1. Principles of neuroanatomy, naurology and clinical neurovisualization.

2. Clinical neuropsychology of: agnosias, neglect aphasias, alexias, agraphias, apraxias, and amnesias,.

3. Clinical neuropsychology of the executive functions.

4. Differential diagnosis in clinical neuropsychology.

5. Interaction among clinical neuroscientists (neuropsychologists, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and neurorurgeons); prevention of neurological disorders.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 1. Classroom lectures.
2. Videopresentations of neuropsychological cases.
3. Interactive participation online in the WEB Forum of the course.
Additional notes about suggested reading: For students without the required knowledge of Psychobiology and Cognitive psychology, the following textbooks are suggested (they are not required for sustaining the exam):
