Syllabus
Prerequisites: This course would like to offer an overview of the methods and the marker tasks for the evaluation of cognitive functions at birth and during infancy. The knowledge of developmental cognitive psychology is strongly recommended.
Target skills and knowledge: The main aim of the laboratory is to give an overview of the methods used for studying very young infants both with typical and atypical development, especially babies at high genetic/ familial risk for neuro-developmental disorders (i.e., pre-term infants, at high risk for autism).
Examination methods: Written and/or oral evaluation. Ongoing evaluations of the skills acquired during the laboratory.
Assessment criteria: Will be evaluated:
1- Practical skills during the lab (video coding, etc.).
2- How to ideate, create and then to carry on a research project that will cover the topics discussed during lessons.
Course unit contents: The present course aims to:
- Describe what are the risk factors in the neonatal age as well as in early infancy and how can they be evaluated and monitored
- Describe and discuss research projects related to the study of populations at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders (autism, premature birth)
- Describe how classical assessment scales (NBAS, Griffiths, Uzgiris-Hunt, etc.) can be used together with experimental marker tasks in order to trace developmental trajectories both for typical and atypical development.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The present course includes both theoretical and practical lessons (presentation and discussion of research and / or clinical projects, reading of target articles, video coding and assessment scoring during experimental sessions of infants with typical and atypical development).
Additional notes about suggested reading: Target articles will be discussed during lessons.
