Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge on typical and atypical developmental processes; assessment of child development, family psychology
Target skills and knowledge: Acquire knowledge on:
1. stress during development
2. main stress dealing strategies to be used with children and youths in typical (e.g., school) and atypical (e.g., emergency, hospital) environments
Examination methods: The exam is in written form and includes 1 open, but very focused question that will request to discuss a case study and will need to be answered within 30 minutes.
International students can take the exam in English.
Assessment criteria: Students' comprehension of all the topics, the methodologies and the ability to use them in different contexts will be assessed.
Course unit contents: 1. Stress and stress-response
2. neuropsychology of the stress response
3. effects of stress on development: the importance of sensitive periods
4. stress dealing strategies for children and youths
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching methods include theoretical lessons using PowerPoint, videos and other exemplifying material. Interactive activities and group discussions as well as the presentation of case studies are highly encouraged.
Additional notes about suggested reading: No book is mandatory for the exam. Materials will be given to students during lessons (research articles, book chapters and summary prepared ad hoc)
