Syllabus
Prerequisites: Foundation of psychometrics, psychological test theory and tests techniques (reliability, and test validity), developmental and adult clinical psychology.
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides students with theoretical and methodological knowledge of the assessment in general and of some clinical and dynamic psychology techniques, in particular specific psychological tests which are largely diffused and very useful in clinical psychology and in psycho-diagnostic evaluation of adults, children and the family as a whole, will be taken into consideration.
Students will acquire knowledge and ability to critically apply some psychological tests which are relevant both in the research and in clinical practice.
Examination methods: One hour written examination with both open and multiple choice questions.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the written examination will take into consideration the knowledge and all the abilities as mentioned above which are acquired during the course with frontal lectures, training activities and personal study.
The evaluation is concerned with the theoretical and methodological competences and with the applied contexts typical of the assessment techniques, more in particular with the competence and the ability in dealing with the administration procedures, the scoring and the interpretation of the results obtained with the tests presented during the course.
Course unit contents: The principal aspects of clinical evaluation will be addressed together with a review of the most important assessment tools in clinical and dynamic psychology. Potentiality, limits, application contexts, construction, standardization and correct application will be treated for some of the procedures presented.
Both at a theoretical level and by means of guided exercises, the study of the following issues will be successively deepen: the administration procedures, the scoring and the interpretation of the results obtained with some significant instruments in relation to fundamental contexts, such as adults, children and family functioning psycho-diagnosis.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching is mainly based on frontal lectures, where the different issues are treated from a theoretical point of view and in their general aspects. To enlarge and deepen the study, every week theoretical teaching will be integrated with guided exercises concerned with administration procedures, scoring and interpretation of at least three instruments that are applied for adults, children and family functioning psycho-diagnosis. For these reasons the course should be attended regularly.
Students attending the course are required to participate in group activities and discussions .
In his/her personal study the student is supposed to strengthen his/her learning of the issues treated in class using the references suggested by the teacher, which are mainly test manuals and scientific articles concerned with the tests presented in class.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Students are invited to consult and to get familiar with the tests suggested in class that can be found at the Psychology Test Library. In class further indications will be given concerning other study material, in particular a list of scientific articles dealing with the treated issues.
