Prerequisites: Basic knowledge is that acquired in the courses of the first level degree (L3), in particular, Social Psychology, Group Psychology, and Methodology in Socio-Psychological Research.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of this course is to deepen fundamental theories of intergroup and intragroup relationships. Studies derived from these theories, carried out in organizational contexts, will be also analyzed. The student will acquire theoretical knowledge essential for the understanding and analysis of group processes, and will learn to apply research designs and methodological instruments, useful for work activities pertaining to: the relationship between ethnic, regional, and national groups; human resources in companies and institutions.
Examination methods: Exams will be written and will consist of true/false and open-ended questions (duration: 90 minutes). International students are given the opportunity to take the exam in English.
Assessment criteria: Preparation of the student will be evaluated on the basis of the understanding of the theoretical problems treated and the ability to translate knowledge into applications. The student must demonstrate theoretical skills regarding how relations between dominant and subordinate groups in society develop; how relations of cooperation and cohesion within the group develop; the dynamics of social influence and leadership. The student has also to demonstrate methodological skills relating to research designs and measures used in Social Psychology.
Course unit contents: 1) social categorization and the formation of psychological group;
2) how cohesion and cooperation within groups develop;
3) social influence and leadership dynamics;
4) organizational issues and studies carried out in organizational contexts;
5) relationships between dominant and subordinate groups in society: intergroup theories that explain the maintenance of existing social systems.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: During lessons, all the program contents will be discussed. The active and critical participation of students will be fostered. Meetings are scheduled in the classroom with professionals, experts in group processes, who will intervene on applicative issues within the organization.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Study materials in English will be provided, if required, for international students.
