Syllabus
Prerequisites: No prerequisites are required.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to make known the risk factors and the symptoms / signs of the major chronic degenerative pathologies; The main methods for assessing the physical efficiency of subjects carrying chronic diseases with particular reference to aging; the application of the protocols of functional evaluation to the various pathological situations and the related exercise prescription, together with the most important dietary measures.
Examination methods: The exam will consist of an oral evaluation.
Assessment criteria: The final grade will results from the written examination. However, also students' interest and participation will be considered.
Course unit contents: Chronic conditions and exercise prescription; General epidemiological information on chronic diseases and physical activity; Risk factors for chronic diseases; Physiopathology and physical fitness assessment for: chronic cardiovascular disease; Chronic respiratory tract disorders; Cancer; Osteo-articular pathologies. General guidelines for physical activity programs in chronic diseases. Exercise protocols for chronic diseases; Guidelines for preparing an exercise protocol and for preparing a group motor activity class with reference to the guidelines for chronic conditions. Examples of exercise programs for various chronic illnesses. Main dietary aspects for chronic diseases. The balanced diet and the Mediterranean model in the healthy subject. The dietary variations to be made in the following pathologies: obesity and metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, rheumatic and tumor diseases, chronic respiratory diseases.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal and interactive didactics. Examples of clinical cases.
Additional notes about suggested reading: There is no required text for this course. The lessons will be uploaded on the platform of the Course and provided by the teacher in computer copy (both in pdf format and in video and audio of the lessons held). Students are also expected to be able to search and critically-review recent literature and therefore are responsible for gaining access to peer-reviewed sources via online databases or University library holdings.
