Prerequisites: General knowledge on human movement sciences, human physiology and statistics. Students must have adequate knowledge of the English language (the course is held in English).
Target skills and knowledge: This course aims to support knowledge and understanding of methods and research processes concerning physical activity, exercise and sport, including the hypothesis definition, the data collection and analysis processes and the presentation of results.
Examination methods: Written, five to 10 open question with brief reply
Assessment criteria: Evaluation criteria are:
- knowledge and understanding of the contents;
- ability of critical reworking the contents;
- clarity in presenting contents and results;
- ability in synthesizing contents and results.
Course unit contents: a) Research methods in PA
- the different phases of research;
- the research settings;
- the different type of research (basic and applied research, primary and secondary research, qualitative and quantitative research);
- bibliographic searching and bibliographic search engines (AIRE, Pubmed, Sport discus);
- national and international scientific associations, and scientific journal in the field of exercise and sport sciences;
- measure, test, assessment;
- defining a research hypothesis;
- the measure process;
- the strategies to analyse data and the statistical approach to quantitative data;
- using the questionnaires in exercise and sport sciences;
- how to structure a research poster and an oral presentation.

b) Functional evaluation
principles and definitions, anthropometrics and body composition assessment techniques, strength assessment, evaluation of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, aerobic power assessment, balance and flexibility assessments.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Key-lessons, workshops, practical activities, group discussion, group-based work, presentation and critical discussion of single and group-based "homework".
