Syllabus
Prerequisites: Operating principles of AC electrical machines. Main architectures and control aspects of DC/AC, AC/DC and DC/DC power electronic conversion. Fundamentals of control theory.
Target skills and knowledge: Presentation and discussion of the electrical architectures including electrical generators, power converters and energy storage for renewable energy sources. Ability to derive the formulations describing the steady-state and dynamic operation of electrical generators, both at fixed and variable speed. Knowledge of the storage systems parameters and their variation range according to the adopted technology. Software modeling and analysis of electrical generatots and power converters of typical renewable generation systems.
Examination methods: Oral examination regarding the discussion on a report related to the laboratory simulation exercise and two open questions to check the candidate knowledge about the main course topics. One question will be focused on the electrical generators. Two calls will be scheduled for each session, during which the examination date will be arranged.
Assessment criteria: The main evaluation will concerna the ability to present and discuss technical solutions and methodologies for the performance analysis of single devices (generator, power converter, storage systems) and of the whole plant as well. The following aspects will be checked in detail:
- the knowledge of the operating performances useful to address the more suitable application field for the given technology;
- the ability to describe the circuit models and the related techniques for the analysis/solution;
- the ability to implement and analyze of basic plant models or models of single electronic/electromagnetic devices by a numerical simulation code
Course unit contents: 1) Introduction (0.5 CFU)
Main renewable energy sources and conversion principles. Electrical generation and power conversione architectures. Power control with the electrical grid.
2) Power converters for renewable sources (1 CFU)
Multi-pulse rectifiers. Voltage source multilevel inverters. Examples of application.
3) Electrical generators (4 CFU)
Squirrel cage and doubly fed induction generators. Permanent magnet generators. Single phase generators. Linear generators.
4) Electrical energy storage systems (2 CFU)
Main storage parameters. Main storage technologies (pumped hydro, compressed air, batteries, supercaps and flywheels).
5) Wind generation (0.5 CFU)
Physical characterization of the wind energy conversion process. Power characteristic and energy yield. Horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines. Typical ratings for small to large wind generators. Fixed and variable speed wind generators.
6) Laboratory activity (1 CFU)
Simulation of generation/conversion systems by educational software packages (Matlab/Simulink)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lectures based on slides preliminarly provided to the students. Laboratory activities concerning the simulation of basic generation schemes by an educational software package. Possible arrangement of a technical seminar or visit involving recognized companies operating in the renewable energy sector.
