Prerequisites: The course is a teaching block in its own right, and as such has no prerequisites, neither any are imposed by the academic regulations.
Instead, as a free class, it can be attended by students enrolled in any master degree program, provided it is compatible with the the degree itself, both at the first and second year.
Target skills and knowledge: "A long and slow sequence of discoveries and inventions made possible the way we live today. The progress of humanity was often erratic and unpredictable, but good ideas are rarely forgotten. They are borrowed and copied and thus spread in an evolutionary process which transforms things luxuries of an era in need of the next. ... "
Aim of the course is understanding how technology has evolved in human history, as how it relates to the politics, economics, wars, religion, culture:
- creating a culture of technology, now largely absent in Italy, where it is often seen with diffidence (or ignored) by the traditional culture and the other hand it is neglected by technicians and scientists.
- promoting awareness of the role that an advanced and responsible technology has in ensuring a competitive national economy, in the context of inevitable globalization while guaranteeing at the same time of a sustainable development.
The class offers a reading of technological development in the framework of the political, cultural and social context in which it occurs, re-reading some historical events from the technological point of view, in order to infer awareness on today technological challenges.
At the end of the course the student will also hold the fundamental technical terminology of technology and engineering.
The lessons will be modulated in such a way as to contribute to education for teaching.
Examination methods: Written test consisting of 30 multiple-answer quizzes, only one being correct. Optional oral test.
Assessment criteria: The multiple-answer quizzes allow the student to acquire a score from 0 to 30. An corrective algorithm provides a sufficent score with 15 right answers and "laudem" with all the right answers.
The student can ask an additional oral test.
Course unit contents: Teaching is organized so as to contextualize the main stages of the process of development of technological knowledge in the basic stages of the evolution of civilizations, cultures and sciences. This will highlight how they have addressed the technology and how they, in turn, have been promoted and constrained by technology. Program: The teaching will consider different aspects of the technological development in a context not limited only to engineering and even less specifically to industrial engineering. The topics are organized into six parts:
PART I: technological development from the origins of the first technological revolution
PART II: technological development from the ancient empires to the fall of the Roman Empire
PART III: Technological Development from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance (second technological revolution)
PART IV: technological development from seventh century (scientific revolution) to the industrial revolution
PART V: technological development in the nineteenth century (the second industrial revolution)
PART VI: technological development in the twentieth century.
PART IV: technological development from the seventeenth century (scientific revolution) to the industrial revolution
PART V: technological development in the nineteenth century (second industrial revolution)
PART VI: contemporary technological development in the twentieth century.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lessons assited by multimedial shows containing scripts, images, and videos.
