Prerequisites: Hydraulics, Basic Hydrology, Solid Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Water supply and drainage systems
Target skills and knowledge: A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to understand the hydraulic and structural aspects dealing with the design of hydraulic works by use of methods, tools and techniques up-to-date. At the end of the course the student will be able to manage the different aspects that concur to the design of hydraulic structures and to represent the result by use of suitable technical reports and graphical tables.
Examination methods: Written and oral final exam.
Time available to develop a technical report and graphical tables during the written exam: 8 hours (use of textbooks and lecture notes is allowed) – some examples: design of mountain river check dam work; design of provisional works related to a bridge piers building; design of a reservoir devoted to flood peek reduction and related works; design of a fluvial diversion work; ...
Assessment criteria: 50% written and 50% oral - for the admission to the oral exam, one must have passed the written exam
Course unit contents: Aims and design of hydraulic structures; notes on regulations.
Elements of hydrology: hydrological cycle; collection and analysis of data; geometrical representation of hydrological basins and of rivers; rainfall data analysis; flood models.
Hydraulic of canals, rivers and mountain streams.
Bed-load transport; check dams; riverbank stabilization and protection; stream junctions; levee design and other river improvements; scouring; diversion works; bridges and culverts.
Hydroelectric plants: dam regulation, weir and barrages; energy dissipation and stilling basins; provisional works; canals and hydraulic tunnels.
Elements of inland waterways.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: individual study and homeworks - lessons on the blackboard and with the help of slides
