Prerequisites: Mathematical Analysis 1,2; Physics 1; Hydraulics, Transport Phenomena
Target skills and knowledge: To set the methodological basis for developing models to be applied at problems related to the fate and transport of pollutants in natural water bodies.
Examination methods: Oral examination. Each candidate must answer 2 questions on the topics presented during the lessons and discuss the report of an exercise.
Assessment criteria: The final mark is given by the average of the marks attributed to each question and to the report discussion. All three marks must be sufficient.
Course unit contents: General principles: mass and energy balances; molecular diffusion; solutions of the advection-diffusion equation. Ensemble and temporal averages; ensemble mean concentration; ensemble mean cloud and ensemble mean of clouds; turbulent diffusion; turbulent diffusion coefficients. Hydrodynamic dispersion; depth averaged mass conservation equation and related mixing coefficients; longitudinal mixing in a plane flow (Elder approach); cross sectionally averaged mass conservation equation; derivation of the longidutinal dispersion coefficient and estimation methodologies. Transport and mixing in rivers: mass balance equation; Streeter-Phelps equation and its improvements. Dissolved Oxygen dynamics in wide rivers and estuaries. Introduction to the theory of density currents and its application to water bodies, specifically to the estuaries (salt wedge).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Individual study and development of exercises. Lectures, which are supported by power point presentations, to provide theoretical knowledge. Laboratory activities to apply and assess the models to real case studies.
